Exciting Update: Introducing our new online submission system!

We are pleased to announce a significant development for the International Journal of Disability and Social Justice. In collaboration with Pluto Journals and ScienceOpen, we are transitioning our article submission system to an online platform. For more information on our submission process please visit the Author Submissions page of our website.

Since our inception in 2021, IJDSJ has worked towards the goal of bringing together the global disability research community with a focus on social justice for disabled people. To date, we have published 60 publications in pursuit of this mission, thanks to our collaboration with Pluto Journals. Our progress has been made possible by a dedicated editorial team and a committed network of reviewers who have managed submissions through a largely manual process.

While ScienceOpen has hosted our journal articles for sometime, we are excited to expand our collaboration to include their submission and peer review system. This development builds upon our existing partnership and marks the next step in enhancing our publishing process. This change does not affect our commitment to Open Access publishing. We remain committed to making our content freely available, with no fees for authors to publish in our journal.

The new system will support our ability to disseminate research widely and efficiently. This move to an online submission system through ScienceOpen will improve our ability to communicate with authors and reviewers. The new platform will streamline our processes, allowing for:

  • More efficient submission handling
  • Improved tracking of manuscripts through the review process
  • Better communication channels between editors, authors, and reviewers
  • Increased transparency in the publication timeline

As our journal continues to attract global scholarship in Disability Studies and related fields, this new system will enhance our ability to keep up with increasing demand. By automating administrative tasks, we can focus more on fostering quality research and promoting social justice for disabled people.

A Word of Thanks and Request for Patience

We thank Pluto Journals and ScienceOpen for their ongoing support and collaboration. Their expertise has been valuable in implementing this new system and in our publishing journey so far.

As with any significant change, we anticipate there may be some initial adjustments. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this new process. Introducing our new Sponsor & Executive Editors

Some exciting developments at the IJDSJ! We are delighted to announce a new relationship with the International Disability Alliance (IDA). IDA will be sponsoring this journal. We are most grateful for their support. Together, we will work to ensure that the IJDSJ is a vehicle for increasing dialogue between researchers and organisations of disabled persons (disabled people’s organisations). We thank them very much for their support.

To further the connection between the IJDSJ and IDA, and in recognition of his expertise as a researcher, leading activist and advocate for disability rights, we have invited Dr Vladimir Cuk, Executive Director of IDA to join the IJDSJ Editorial Executive. We are very happy to announce that Vladimir has accepted our invitation.

Vladimir is joined by three additional new members of the Editorial Executive – Dr Miro Griffiths MBE (University of Leeds), Dr Beverley Clough (from January 2023, Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University) and Dr Frederic Fovet (Thompson Rivers University), who were all founding members of the IJDSJ’s Editorial Board. We are very happy that they have agreed to join the team who steer and manage this journal. Miro brings expertise in disability policy, activism, youth participation and assistive technology. Beverley (Bev) brings expertise in mental capacity law, critical disability studies and feminist legal studies. Frederic brings expertise in law and inclusive education, accessibility and universal design for learning.

Expression of Interest: becoming a sub-editor of the IJDSJ Reviews Section

Would you like to apply to become a sub-editor of the IJDSJ Reviews Section? The successful applicant will work with Dr Simon T.M. Ng to develop this aspect of the journal.

The role will be for 2 years, after which the sub-editor will be invited to join the Editorial Board and the position will be re-advertised.

There will be three sub-editors of the Reviews section. Up to two positions will be ring-fenced for applicants from the University of Leeds (UK), where the Editor-in-Chief (Professor Angharad Beckett) is based.

The remaining position is open to any doctoral student, from any University, globally.

Checklist:

  • Please only apply if you are a doctoral student (it does not matter what stage of your doctoral studies, you will not be required to step down if you pass your viva during your time as a sub-editor);
  • Please only apply if you can give 1-2 hrs/week (this is maximum, it will often be less) to this role.

This is a voluntary position. There is no salary, or payment of any kind attached to this position.

We especially welcome applications from disabled people/persons with disabilities, women and members of the LGBTQI+ community, members of ethnically minoritised communities and First Nations peoples.

Applications will be considered by at least three members of the IJDSJ Editorial Collective. Their decision will be final. There will be no interviews – the decision will be made on the basis of the information contained within this form. The successful and unsuccessful applicant/s will be informed by email of the outcome.
